Students Get Hands-On Experience in Real World MarketingBy Emily Barnes Commradere Staff The University of Texas at Arlington is one of the few schools nationwide selected to participate in the Chevrolet Campus Promotions program.
Students in the Department of Communication’s advertising campaigns class (ADVT 4301) implemented an entire advertising campaign, from primary research to hosting an event, for Chevrolet.Associate professor Tom Ingram, who teaches the campaigns class, said the real world experience is invaluable for students, even when things don’t work out quite as planned.
“This campaign provides students a great opportunity to work with a real client,” Ingram said. “They're experiencing a real campaign, which includes both success and failures.”
Students created a fully-functioning in-class marketing agency, Mav Ads, which is responsible for six different areas of the campaign – research, public relations, promotions, creative/advertising, finance and event coordination. The six groups work together to research, implement and evaluate an integrated marketing campaign aimed at increasing awareness for Chevrolet’s electric vehicles -- the Volt, Cruze and Equinox -- as well as the Chevrolet College Discount Program among UT Arlington’s Gen Y students. |

UTA Radio wins prestigious Mercury Award By Amal Saadat Commradere Staff
What began as a radio production class assignment become a Mercury Award as faculty adviser Lance Liguez submitted a public service announcement piece in August 2011. It was titled "Get Tested" featuring a frantic girl in a doctor's office after a one-night stand. Jillian Dennis and Trey Caron, both students in Liguez' summer II radio production class, produced the piece. Dennis came up with the idea and Caron directed the production. Liguez said he believes they prevailed over the 55 other finalists because of the importance of the subject manner and the quality of their submission. "The production was able to capture racing thoughts in audio," he said. Finalists were announced at the end of September and the award was accepted on Oct. 4. "It is an honor that we are able to stand on national stage with some of the work we have produced here at UT Arlington," Liguez said. The Mercury Award came with a $2,500 check, which will go to the department to further utaradio.com as well as to radio equipment upgrades. The 30-second winning segment can be heard online, at http://radio.uta.edu/index.php/news. |
